New FIDE Rapidplay Rule

FIDE have published the new rules of chess applicable from January 2023 including one change to the FIDE rapidplay rules. Traditionally an illegal move in rapidplay is punishable by giving two extra minutes on the clock. This has now been changed to one minute.

HOWEVER, the Shropshire Rapidplay league rules make clear that all laws of chess apply with the following exceptions including:
6. If one player makes an illegal move, their opponent may stop the clocks and claim 2 minutes. Players will never lose the match (by forfeit) through the making of illegal moves.

Therefore unless amended at the AGM this rule change will not impact our rapidplay rules. It might impact players who attend rapidplay tournaments.
