Junior Chess in Shropshire

The Shropshire Chess Association supports junior chess throughout the county. We both organise junior tournaments and leagues as well as help to establish new clubs through our schools and junior clubs equipment project. Our volunteers run a junior chess club in Shrewsbury.

Below is a list of active Junior Chess Clubs & Activities within Shropshire:


Shropshire Junior Chess Club
Saturdays 11.00-13.00 – Nerdy Coffee Shop, 49 Mardol, Shrewsbury

A junior club for ages 6-13 where players play friendly matches, compete in tournaments as well as receiving coaching from some of the top players in Shropshire. The club remains heavily over-subscribed and so operates a waiting list.

Ludlow Library
Wednesdays 15.30-17.00

Weekly chess for young people aged 10-16! Some chess knowledge is required. Informal relaxed group with weekly tuition, puzzle training and friendly matches.



Newport Junior Chess Club
Tuesdays starting 6.30pm – Royal British Legion, Avenue Road, Newport

Newport Chess Club is for those aged 10 and above. Tuition is provided alongside friendly matches, club tournaments, competitive matches and much more.

Telepost Chess Club
Mondays starting 7.30pm – Telepost sports & social club, railway lane, off abbey foregate, Shrewsbury

Telepost have a growing junior section with over 10 juniors who regularly turn up to the club each week. Telepost are entering their first junior team in the Shropshire league this year.


Telford Chess Club

Wednesdays starting 7.30pm – The Royal British Legion, Station Road, Dawley, Telford

Telford have a number of older juniors and will be entering a junior team in the Shropshire League this year.

Mondays 16.45-17.45

Weekly chess club for amateur players.

Junior 4NCL Online County Team
Our Junior 4NCL county team competes online, on Lichess, on Thursday evenings against other junior teams across the UK. We have multiple teams in different divisions accomodating to all enthusiastic junior players.

Junior Tournaments
Shropshire Chess Association host 2 junior tournaments each year. At the end of spring we run the regional megafinals, an official qualifier event for the UK Chess Challenge gigafinals. We also host the Shropshire Junior Congress, open to all juniors both inside the county and outside. Find the latest tournament dates here.
