Minutes of Council Meeting held 19th September 2006

  1. Apologies for absence were given by Francis Best, Glyn Pugh, Derrick Powell, Gary White
  2. Minutes of 2005 Council Meeting agreed. No matters arising.
  3. Officers reports
    1. CR – nothing to report
    2. JC - verbal report – fixtures on website. Lost Newport B, gained Church Stretton B and Shrewsbury Juniors who will play all their games at home. John Liddell will take on duties whilst JC is out of action. He will be going into hospital for an operation early to mid November.  RT said that some of the Shifnal & Telford fixtures would have to be changed due to clashes with the Wolverhampton league and asked if fixtures could be put in fortnightly blocks.
    3. FB- sent apologies. He asked if we could give more notice.
    4. GP – sent apologies nothing to report.
    5. NR – verbal report – List was out in July revised list out August. There were 7 changes by 1 point.
    6. NR – written report- Winner Nigel Ferrington, 2nd Nick Rutter, 3rd Richard Bryant. U140 David Bates, U120 JohnWhittaker, U100 Andy Tunks. Best Game Prize Colin Roberts.
    7. KG – verbal report – 22nd October. At Froncysylte , date has been changed to avoid a clash with county matches.
    8. DP – written report – Cox Trophy winners were Shifnal & Telfrod A 4:1 against Ludlow A. Minor knockout was won by Church Stretton 4.5:0.5 against Market Drayton.
    9. TN – thanks to all contributors.
    10. JC – verbal report – This year’s event will be held from 23rd – 30th September, 10am-4pm. Its aim is to promote chess & as a means of recruitment. Lawrence Cooper is doing a simul on the first Saturday, 13 names so far, charging £2 adults £1 juniors. Proceeds to go to a Childrens Cancer Charity. Shrewsbury chronicle to sponsor a cup. Following week quickplay. During week demo game at midday ideally 3 people a day 2 playing one with the public.
    11. KT – verbal report – Vinnie now in Australia. KT not able to get hold of W Evans but looking for more support. Anyone interested contact him.
    12. CR– congress organisation in progress.
    13. No report.
    14. WP – verbal report – fixtures clash with the U125 team. The trophy has now been presented to us for winning the MCCU title. 28/10/06 Greater Manchester home, 25/11/06 Leicestershire home, 27/01/07 Warwickshire away.
    15. JW – verbal report – U125 lost 2 got some new players. 28/10/06 Staffordshire home, 02/12/06 Derbyshire home, 06/01/07 Derbyshire away, 27/01/07 Leicestershire away, 24/02/07 Worcestershire home, 24/03/07 Nottinghamshire away.
    16. ID – verbal report – non playing captain. Hope to emulate last season. 14/10/06 Staffordshire away, 25/11/06 Staffordshire home, 13/01/07 Worcestershire away.
    17. RT – MCCU level membership now available. MCCU trying to emulate the scheme used by North of England but the criteria for membership is not clear as yet.
    18. NR – now ECF. Martin Regan standing as a delegate. Various others are being proposed to oppose the existing candidates. It appears to be a Manchester based campaign.

    1. 100 years ago British Chess Championship were held at Shrewsbury Music Hall. Should we commemorate this?
    2. Another discussion about the rule, which allows a player to play for two clubs.
