Shropshire Chess Congress - 7-8 January 2012

GAMES FROM SHROPSHIRE CONGRESS 2012

The critical game in the Shropshire Chess Congress Open section was this round 4 encounter between Tomasz Sygnowski and the eventual tournament winner Tristan Cox. At this stage both players were on 3 out of 3. It was a fierce King's Gambit with Tomasz sacrficing his queen and then wanting more than the forced draw. Tristan told us that he thought Tomasz had not been able to decide which of several wins to go for and eventually let him back into the game, and after this win he was one point clear of the field and held Nigel Ferrington to a draw in the final round to take the top spot outright.

The first round threw up a challenge for Church Stretton's Trevor Brotherton. Notorious for arriving a few minutes late for every game, Trevor arrived to see that he had been paired against top seed IM John Cox with the black pieces. But our man has nerves of steel and was undeterred, managing to hold Cox, who heralds from Shropshire originally, to a draw in a tough ending where both players were in their last minute at the 36-move time control. We join the game at move 32.
